Matt Reeves reveals canceled Batman spin-offs, teases 'The Penguin' series

Matt Reeves, the visionary behind “The Batman,” recently revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that two planned spin-off series set in the Batman universe have been canceled for the time being. The series were initially intended to delve into the Gotham Police Department and the infamous Arkham Asylum.

Reeves explained that while developing the shows, HBO executives encouraged him to focus on more prominent characters, leading to the creation of “The Penguin.” This upcoming HBO Max series centers around Colin Farrell’s captivating portrayal of Oz Cobblepot, exploring his rise to power in the criminal underworld.

Reeves hinted that certain elements from the canceled series have been incorporated into “The Penguin,” promising a compelling narrative that delves into the power vacuum created by the events of “The Batman.” He emphasized the show’s potential to reveal the true nature of the Penguin, a character often underestimated by his adversaries.

Despite the cancellation of the Gotham PD and Arkham Asylum series, Reeves remains optimistic about the future of the Batman Epic Crime Saga, envisioning it as a grand and mythic tale with Shakespearean undertones. Fans can anticipate the premiere of “The Penguin” on HBO Max and Max in September.
