Robert De Niro just called US President, Donald Trump, a “bully” and that people need to stand up against his remarks and rants.

At the Cannes Film Festival, after the legendary actor accepted the honorary Palme d’Or, he told The Guardian, that accepting an award abroad felt like a reprieve from the political upheaval of the US.

“We have to stop what’s going on, it’s insane,” De Niro said, adding, “We can’t have apathy and silence. You have to speak up and risk being harassed.”

Using his acceptance speech, the Casino star, who has been a vocal critic of Trump since 2016, took aim at “America’s Philistine president.”

He urged people listening to act “without violence, but with great passion and determination,” asking people to organize, protest, vote, and “show our strength” during the film festival.

He discussed that even though his comments make him worry for his life, De Niro sated, “But I’m too old for all that. The man is a bully and you can’t let bullies win. If a bully comes for your lunch money on Monday, he’s going to ask for more on Tuesday. You have to stand up. And I wouldn’t want to look at myself if I didn’t.”

This is also not the first time the veteran star has commented on Donald Trump with Robert De Niro previously labelling the politician as “stupid” at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival while discussing his character in Killers Of The Flower Moon.
