Fans’ warm reactions to 28 Years Later, a sequel released after nearly two decades, are now set to get a third installment, which will reportedly star Cillian Murphy.
According to Deadline, Sony has greenlit the project after the 2025 apocalyptic movie, directed by Nia DaCosta, performed well at the box office, raking in $151 million worldwide.
For the third installment, the studio has screenwriter Alex Garland readying the script, while the Oppenheimer actor, who is a veteran of the zombie horror franchise as Jim, is in talks to return.
Directed by Danny Boyle, the franchise’s first movie, titled 28 Days Later, arrived in 2001. It was a hit at the box office; made on a budget of $8 million, it has grossed over $72 million globally.
On the other hand, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is set to drop next year, but Alfie Williams, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O’Connell, and Ralph Fiennes, who starred in 28 Years Later, will not appear in the forthcoming movie except for Jodie.
The movie will hit cinemas on Jan 16, 2026.
