World celebrates Sparrow Day

VEHARI  –  March 20 is celebrated as World Sparrow Day globally. This day is observed to highlight the importance of this tiny bird and to raise awareness about its conservation. According to research, the sparrow population has been declining steadily. Sparrows have been an integral part of our homes, gardens, and cities. However, over the past few decades, their numbers have dwindled alarmingly. Globally, their population has declined by up to 50%, while in some areas of Pakistan, the decline has been as high as 80%. Experts say that sparrows play a crucial role in our ecosystem. They feed on insects and pests, protecting crops, and help disperse plant seeds. However, the increasing urban population, deforestation, and use of pesticides have contributed to their declining numbers. Over the past decade, there has been a significant decline in sparrow populations. Elderly citizens recall how sparrows used to chirp in every household’s courtyard. We used to feed them and watch them build nests in our homes. Today’s children don’t even recognize them. Local environmental experts attribute the decline in sparrow populations to modern construction, tree cutting, and pesticide use. Wildlife experts say that sparrows are a reflection of our environment. If they disappear, it means our environment is no longer healthy. It is our collective responsibility to protect this tiny bird’s species for future generations. Remember, small steps can bring significant change.
