LAHORE – The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has completed the conservation and restoration works of the historic ‘Akbari Sarai Masjid’, located within the Shahdara Complex. According to WCLA sources here on Friday, historical records suggest that the Mosque was originally constructed during the Suri period, while its grand gateway was later added during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, positioned at the center of the wall between Asif Jah’s sarai within the Shahdara Complex. The Shahdara Complex, a site of immense historical significance, was transferred to the Walled City of Lahore Authority in 2023. Following this transfer, the Authority formulated detailed plans to ensure the preservation and protection of its monuments, including the Akbari Sarai Masjid. In 2023, when the monument was handed over to WCLA, an inspection revealed that the Mosque was in a deteriorated condition, with significant structural and architectural issues requiring immediate intervention. WCLA carried out a focused restoration programme, funded by the Punjab government, which included stabilizing weakened sections, repairing damaged roofs, conserving internal halls, restoring external and internal flooring, revitalizing original brick masonry and renewing missing or decayed lime plaster. Decorative elements were consolidated and drainage and regulation systems were improved to prevent further deterioration. All work was supervised by the Director General WCLA and an Advisory Committee to ensure the site’s authenticity and original craftsmanship were preserved. The Walled City of Lahore Authority, Director General Najmus Saqib said,
“The conservation of Akbari Sarai Mosque is another step toward our mission of safeguarding Lahore’s historical treasures. Our goal is to revive these monuments with the utmost respect for their original form and craftsmanship, allowing future generations to witness and appreciate the architectural glory of the past. We are working under the directions and vision of the Government of Punjab to restore heritage and boost tourism.” The successful restoration of the Akbari Sarai Mosque stands as a testament to WCLA’s continued dedication to preserving Lahore’s cultural heritage and promoting the historic Shahdara Complex as a vital destination for visitors, scholars and researchers alike.
